LOL Cats & Bill Bryson

In case anyone was curious about anything we talked about last week, the name of the website with all the LOL cats that some of you may love and others may scoff at is:
http://icanhascheezburger.com/ .

You can't take yourself seriously for this site. Not all of them are winners, but some of them really make me laugh. It's good for when you need a pick me up or a break. If anyone here follows forums (I am a HUGE nerd since I used to work for video game magazines) and at the time, a lot of forums were making fun of pictures of a walrus with a bucket (they be stealin' me bucket), a cat that spied on you from the ceiling (aka Ceiling Cat), and a big fat grey cat that was always asking for a cheeseburger (I can haz cheezburger?). From those three pictures started sites where more pictures of cats in different situations developed, with captions displaying the situations. What tickles me is that these cats have no sense of grammar skills at all...as if cats could talk, but if they could, they would sound and write like fools. It's ingenious, really. It's epic nerdiness at it's best. Enjoy.

Also, the Bill Bryson book is called: "Made in America: An Informal History of the English Language in the United States". Don't let the title fool you too much. It really does have some great historical tidbits that I found interesting. Personally I am not a huge Boll Bryson fan (he's best on tape), but esp for English teachers, it is a great way to look into a big part of American history. He's rather funny at times, so he keeps what could be truly boring material slightly entertaining. If anyone has read this, I'd love to hear your take.

That is all...just some fun things for those who find the time...

Comment

I finished reading "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" this afternoon. Probably not supposed to have read the whole thing at once, but I couldn't help myself. It was so dang entertaining and heartbreaking and I wanted to feel like I had already finished a project before the semester really got started.

So, will we have chapter discussion questions posted here every week? Let me at 'em! I'm ready! The sooner the better.

Did I mention I'm student teaching this semester - and worried that I'll get swamped by mid-semester?

I'll save my comments about the book for a little while longer, in case there are chapter-based discussion questions coming, and so I don't risk ruining such a great book for those who haven't read it yet.
